Self Help @ Home

Things you can do at home to relieve muscle pain:
  • Apply heat via wheat bag or hot water bottle or…..
  • Hot compress (microwave damp face cloth — add some lavender essential oil if you have)
  • Rub in deep heat cream regularly, especially before going to bed
  • Wrap up in a scarf before going to bed if you have a sore neck
  • Take a warm bath or spa
  • Stretch
  • Avoid caffeinated drinks, as they hype up the nervous system and increase muscle spasms/tension
  • Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration as this makes muscles ache more
  • Treat your own trigger points by placing a golf or tennis ball on the floor and pressing the sore spot into it for a few minutes until the pain or spasm reduces. This works well for spots on your buttocks, neck and shoulder blades
  • A few drops of vegetable oil can be a workable lubricant if you need to massage yourself or a partner

WARNING:

Avoid heat if you see signs of inflammation. Heat makes inflammation worse.
Signs of inflammation are:
  • Pain
  • Heat
  • Redness
  • Swelling
If you have these symptoms combined with loss of movement, use a bag of frozen peas for 7 minutes at a time and see your doctor as soon as possible.
