Self Help @ Home
Things you can do at home to relieve muscle pain:
- Apply heat via wheat bag or hot water bottle or…..
- Hot compress (microwave damp face cloth — add some lavender essential oil if you have)
- Rub in deep heat cream regularly, especially before going to bed
- Wrap up in a scarf before going to bed if you have a sore neck
- Take a warm bath or spa
- Stretch
- Avoid caffeinated drinks, as they hype up the nervous system and increase muscle spasms/tension
- Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration as this makes muscles ache more
- Treat your own trigger points by placing a golf or tennis ball on the floor and pressing the sore spot into it for a few minutes until the pain or spasm reduces. This works well for spots on your buttocks, neck and shoulder blades
- A few drops of vegetable oil can be a workable lubricant if you need to massage yourself or a partner
WARNING:
Avoid heat if you see signs of inflammation. Heat makes inflammation worse.
Signs of inflammation are:
- Pain
- Heat
- Redness
- Swelling
If you have these symptoms combined with loss of movement, use a bag of frozen peas for 7 minutes at a time and see your doctor as soon as possible.
